The Necrotour is a free service of the Secretariat that aims to resignify the space associated with funeral characteristics, as well as the imaginary of a morbid space, to give way to the concept of an open-air museum which protects a priceless architectural heritage beauty highly linked to the historical component of a city, the characters that make it up and in the case of San Salvador, the history of the country itself.

The tour takes place at the Los Ilustres Cemetery on the second and last Saturday of each month. Each tour is planned with different topics of interest, from architectural and patrimonial themes, to the political and social legacy represented in the various characters that are found in the cemetery. On the second Saturday of each month, the tours take on a general theme beginning at 6:00 p.m. On the other hand, on the last Saturday of the month, the tour begins at 5:00 p.m. and the theme varies to specific topics that sometimes respond to commemoration dates or historical or heritage celebrations, such as the Day of the Dead in November. These tours are accompanied by various activities that reinforce the content to be covered. Among some of the themes we can mention tours with content dedicated to Architecture / sculpture, writers and poets, academics and intellectuals, Artists, Illustrious Musicians, Former Presidents, Freemasons and Illustrious Women.

The Necrotour has an established schedule, but private tours can be requested upon reservation at the number of the Secretariat of Culture of San Salvador: 2511 6320 and in coordination with the corresponding managers, in order to design a program appropriate to the needs and special situation. With a duration of 45 to 60 minutes and within the current pandemic context, the groups are divided with a maximum of 15 people per guide, with no more than 45 people simultaneously inside the cemetery facilities.

All photographs belong to the Municipality of San Salvador.

Each guide will be able to reserve the right of admission according to the symptomatic manifestations that any of the attendees may present. A formal presentation of Necrotourism is carried out, regarding the importance of the cemetery and the theme to be addressed. Respecting the due distance between the participants.

Subsequently, instructions are given on the use of masks, physical contact to be avoided and other restrictions (such as not touching any surface with the hands or leaning against any wall, wall or any other space). Once the instructions have been defined, the tour begins with a guide leading the group and another guide taking care of any questions and concerns of the people present. Each guide will explain each illustrious character in 5 to 10 minutes. After the explanation, there is a space for questions and answers and for taking pictures.
